Building New Myths

Mythos Media header

Beginnings
&
Endings

Amidst all of the turmoil that has occurred both in the US and abroad in 2008, many of the media giants are stomping around blindly. There is no better time for truly independent groups of artists, musicians and myth makers to band together to collaborate, share and grow their myths. This is why Mythos Media formed in 2006-2007, and it remains our singular goal. The time is ripe now, but we need to meet each other halfway.

The days of purely passive media are through. Sure, everyone likes to unwind and watch a movie from time to time, but always existing in that state of consumption leaves people shut-down, and isolated. This is why social media is exploding, even if major corporations are trying to turn the Internet into an ad-laden, vapid wasteland.

We all need stories that we can participate in, and a framework for us to collaborate and create work together. This is our goal moving forward- not only building our own myths but creating a sandbox for you to build your own as well. We believe static media like books and DVDs are merely entrance points into interactivity, collaboration, and the creation of new myths in the future, using technologies that are still being refined even as we speak.

We hope you join us.

Fallen Nation: Babylon Burning

A prophetic, apocalyptic novel.

Fallen Nation Cover In a world where guilt-by-association is enough to convict for terrorism, two rebellious young Americans are locked in a mental asylum for a crime they didn't commit. Though not terrorists, these two are outsiders in nearly every sense of the word: a transsexual and a transgressive philosopher capable of driving even psychiatrists insane. It seems that this is where their stories will end, yet they are both destined to play a role in a revolution that will forever change the world.

With the help of a friend they escape the asylum, and hatch a plan to fund their adventures with some petty larceny. As they travel, dreams and circumstances collide, and before they know it, they are part of a touring band with a growing following. Everything gels when they meet Lilith, a rock goddess just waiting to happen. She names the band Babalon, and sets them on a path of debauchery worthy of the name.

Meanwhile, Adam Trevino - an ex-LAPD cop turned federal agent - tracks them as they cut their chaotic path across the country. Charged with observing them and reporting their activities back to the shadow agency that hired him, Adam begins to wonder who the good guys really are. The uncertainty only mounts as more kids flock to Babalon with cult-like fervor. Shows turn into orgies, and with no one better to point fingers at, the religious right and politicians start blaming everything from the collapse of the American family to the awful economy on this band and the people who follow them.

When a Babalon show leads to a bloody clash between riot police and civilians, Adam is forced to pick sides, and leads a group of hired mercenaries into the desert to remove them permanently. This conflict, and its aftermath, perfectly mirror the collapse and rebirth of an Empire. Part Salmon Rushdie's Ground Beneath Her Feet, part Hunter S. Thompson's Fear And Loathing, Fallen Nation: Babylon Burning questions many of our basic cultural assumptions, makes us re-examine them, and hints at what they may lead us to.

Lives of Ilya

Moodily illustrated vampire mythology

Lives of Ilya cover In this twist on the genre, Tara Vanflower brought immortality back into the cycles of life and death. Mythos Media is thrilled to bring an alternate universe of Vampire mythology. The grand opening event we threw one dark night in LA included good friends of the author both on and off stage. On stage were Jarboe, Dark Muse, Monica Richards and Tara Vanflower herself in a mesmerizing performance of which we are fortunate enough to have video, shot by Dark Muse. A great start in getting the word out for Lives of Ilya, but this is but the beginning.

As we began production of the audio book, we had Jarboe, Peter Steele and Mister Sam on hand to read. Due to scheduling conflicts, Mr. Steele had to bow out but we are very pleased confirmed that Martin Bowes of the great Goth/Electronic/Symphonic/Exerimental act Attrition will be stepping in with his voice talents. Episodes will be available in serial format at the Lives of Ilya site as well as through our friends at Alterati.com.

"Neither a graphic novel nor simply a story with pictures, but an artistic hybrid somewhere between the two...told in Vanflower's deadpan dream transcript style."- Brian John Mitchell, Silber Media.

"An invitation for the reader to be captures by the illusive detachment of literal and metaphorical Vampire"- Jarboe

Lives of Ilya Audiobook

A reading of Tara Vanflower's illustrated vampire mythology, read by Jarboe.

Both the free audiobook and the illustrated color novella are available here.

The Medicine Show

Medicine Show CoverWe were unable to release the expertly illustrated, mythologically themed Medicine Show comic this past summer due to our unhappiness with the printing options available to us. This is a work that demands the right reproduction, and we will continue to hunt for the right vendor for that when circumstances permit. However, we would like to direct you to some of the imagery online, and an in-depth interview conducted with Rudy Rauben on Alterati. We hope to be able to present more myths that come about through our collaboration with this talented artist in the coming year.

Veil of Thorns:
Cognitive Dissonance

Down-and-dirty, dark retro-futuristic music

Veil of Thorns cover Every Veil of Thorns song so far contain lyrics in the form of dreamlike fragments making one continuous tale. Cognitive Dissonance brings some of the underlying structure into focus. While they wove their tale they listened to the stories of others. In the spirit of our times they collected many apocalyptic tales. Ragnarok, Armageddon, the end of one life and the beginning of another forms one side of this archetypal narrative. Tales of the death of the ego, of the body, the breaking down of a belief offer a more insightful view.

Coming off collaborations with Gaia-conscious Industrial cabal subQtaneous and Norwegian post Blackmetal band Manes, Williams took the experience of working with such gifted and unique artists and has re-emerged with a stronger and darker vision. Lyrically encompassing two universes and two realities, this tight and spare album ends up being more expansive an experience than anything Veil of Thorns has released before.

Cognitive Dissonance marked a return to the classic style of classic Veil of Thorns. People found they could dance to it, but it required having been trained by Martha Graham or Twyla Tharp. Online and college radio picked up some tracks, a couple put the entire album into rotation. As P. Emerson Williams has been putting the finishing touches on the kkoagulaa debut, "Aurum Nostrum Non Est Aurum Vulgi" he is well into the writing process for the next Veil of Thorns release.

"...pushes the envelope, shakes up the status quo, and demands attention." -Gothic Beauty

"This is their most stylish work, but some of the thorns have an extra edge." -Mick Mercer

"This is where Rozz Williams and Marilyn Manson merge in an Event Horizon singularity." -Corazine

"...they brew up a dust storm of tight-but-loose guitar riffs and driving, nervy, drums...half way between a lament and a threat." -Uncle Nemesis

Babalon

Female-fronted progressive folk/rock/industrial.

BabalonBased on the myths of "Scarlet Women" such as Lilith, Babalon, and Kali, many of these other projects grew in the ashes that Babalon left.

subQtaneous:
Some Still Despair
In A Prozac Nation

A psychedelic, sonic voyage.

subQtaneous Described as a "stick of dynamite strapped to reality," (Scenery Zine), subQtaneous is a diverse conceptual, collaborative album. It carves new soundscapes ranging from brutal, pounding industrial to sarcastic hip hop set over carnival music to delicately layered trance. It has been compared to Pigface, probably due to its format, as well as Coil, Mr Bungle, and Frank Zappa.

While the tracks are tied together by a common theme - the corrosive dark side of capitalism, and its effects on our psyche - none of the musicians involved in this project try to beat you over the head with their ideology. Instead it remains, as the title would imply, an almost subliminal experience that slowly gets under your skin, and doesn't come out in the wash.

Choronzon

ChoronzonXeno Industrial/Blackmetal act Choronzon were outwardly fairly quiet this year. Behind the scenes they have been hard at work revamping their website, choronzon.org, which will be fully realized in early 2009. Additionally, three releases are at various points of production. There may be news of a range of collaborative partners on one or two of those. Two of the early, long lost recordings resurfaced this year thanks to audio rippers and music pirates/bittorrenters. These tapes, Torn Away – Cassette – 1989, and In My Own Lifeblood I Exult To Float – Cassette - 1991, were obviously lovingly ripped and cleaned up, and P. Emerson decided to pass the mp3's on across the net.
